What is GLA:D®?
GLA:D® is a program designed for hip and knee osteoarthritis, that consists of 2 x education sessions followed by a 6 week exercise program. GLA:D® also involves being part of a study through LaTrobe University in Victoria for those who meet a specific criteria. GLA:D® stands for Good Life with Osteoarthritis in Denmark. As the name suggests the program was pioneered by researchers in Denmark.
Who does it help?
The GLA:D® Program has been shown to help people with mild, moderate and severe osteoarthritis reduce their pain levels, and improve their mobility and quality of life. The program is designed for over 40 year olds who have Osteoarthritis and have not had a knee replacement, however you are still able to participate (and benefit) from the program without specifically meeting the LaTrobe University study criteria.
Why will this program be beneficial for me?
Specific research studies of this program, which has occurred worldwide, have shown a significant improvement in reducing pain and improving functional ability for those suffering from osteoarthritis of the hip and knee. They also found participants were able to reduce their intake of pain medication and in many cases delay or avoid having a hip or knee replacement.
How does the program work?
You will first need an Initial Assessment with one of our GLA:D® trained physios to understand your history and complete some baseline functional assessments that can be used to monitor your progress.
Following this you will have 1 x Individual Exercise Session to customise the exercise program to suit your individual needs and then you will go into one of our GLA:D® Exercise Classes. The sessions are run by one of our GLA:D® trained physios who will take you through your exercises, monitor your progress and make changes to these as you progress through the program.
You will also need to come and have a follow up functional assessment at the 3 month mark.
What sort of exercises will I do?
Classes are set up as a circuit and you will do exercises that focus on specific muscle strength as well as balance, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness. Your program will keep progressing as you get stronger and fitter.
