Common Postnatal Conditions Treated

Low Back Pain

Many women experience low back pain following childbirth due to the increased strain on the lumbar spine. Physiotherapy treatment, including mobilisation, soft tissue work, stretching, and strengthening, aims to support muscle balance and mobility. For those interested in hydrotherapy, select Core Physio locations offer pool-based sessions as well as Physio Group Exercise programs, providing a structured approach to help reduce discomfort.

Sacroiliac Joint Pain

The sacroiliac joints (SIJ), located at the base of the spine, often become hypermobile during pregnancy, potentially leading to postnatal pain. Pain in this area may be one-sided, felt around the lower back or buttocks. Physiotherapy for sacroiliac joint pain may include hands-on techniques, stabilising exercises, and targeted group sessions to support joint stability and encourage healthy movement patterns.

Pelvic Floor Weakness

Many women experience a decline in pelvic floor muscle control after giving birth, which can affect core stability and function. Physiotherapists at Core Physiotherapy and Pilates Studio provide personalised pelvic floor strengthening exercises, allowing clients to safely rebuild this muscle group. Group-based classes and home programs are also available to reinforce and maintain pelvic health.

Diastasis Recti (Abdominal Separation)

Diastasis recti, a separation of the abdominal muscles due to overstretching, is common during pregnancy and may persist postnatally. Physiotherapy for diastasis recti includes strengthening exercises that focus on core stability, helping individuals enhance abdominal support and minimise separation. Our Physio Group Exercise sessions at Core Physiotherapy and Pilates Studio integrate exercises specific to abdominal rehabilitation, helping clients to reengage and strengthen their core.
