Addressing Common Pregnancy-Related Discomforts

Pregnancy brings a range of physical changes that can often result in discomfort, from low back pain to joint concerns.  Our women’s health team provides assessment and interventions that align with each stage of pregnancy, offering hands-on care, group exercises, and education on managing the unique demands of pregnancy.

Common Prenatal Concerns

Low Back Pain

Low back pain is a common experience for many during pregnancy, particularly in the third trimester when the centre of gravity shifts. Our physiotherapists offer individualised treatments, including manual therapy, postural guidance, and home exercise regimens. Participating in a Physiotherapy Group Exercise program may also assist in managing these changes comfortably.

Pelvic Floor Weakness and Urinary Incontinence

Hormonal changes in pregnancy, particularly the release of progesterone, can affect pelvic floor strength, potentially leading to continence concerns. Physiotherapy provides targeted exercises for pelvic floor strengthening, supporting the muscles as they adapt to the physical changes of pregnancy and childbirth. Regular strengthening may help maintain pelvic health and muscle function throughout pregnancy and beyond.

Sacroiliac Joint (SIJ) Discomfort

Hormonal shifts lead to increased mobility in the sacroiliac joints, sometimes causing discomfort and other associated symptoms, such as:

  • Swelling or inflammation over the joint
  • Hip pain or movement restriction
  • Audible clicking sounds from the pelvis
  • Transferred nerve pain into the
  • legs
Through stabilisation exercises and hands-on therapy, our physiotherapists assist in promoting alignment and comfort in the SIJ area. This approach focuses on enhancing stability and supporting healthy movement patterns.

Sciatica

Pressure on the sciatic nerve during pregnancy may result in radiating discomfort from the lower back down through the legs. Depending on individual needs, our physiotherapists utilise manual techniques and stretching exercises, aimed at managing these sensations. The goal is to support mobility and minimise the limitations associated with sciatic nerve pressure.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Fluid retention in pregnancy can lead to swelling around the wrist, impacting the carpal tunnel and causing sensations such as tingling, numbness, and reduced coordination. Physiotherapy includes soft tissue techniques, mobilisation, and a range of exercises to support wrist and hand comfort. Specific braces may also be used at night or during daily activities to manage symptoms and encourage functional movement.
