As we become older, falls & balance programs can help us to avoid injuries. During 2016, 19,175 people were admitted to SA public hospitals after a fall. The majority of these people were over the age of 65. Falls don’t just do damage to the person’s body, they are also traumatic for them, affecting their confidence and mental health.
A person that encounters a serious fall due to loss of balance may need a visit to a hospital, in severe cases, it may result in a hip fracture. After someone has suffered from a severe injury it affects their quality of life. Only 1 in 3 people are able to return to the level of independence that they had prior to this.
Taking Part In Exercise Classes Helps
Falls & Balance Exercise programs that have been developed to help older people avoid falls, also helps them to avoid the injuries that occur when they fall. This reduces the number of falls that need medical care. Strength, endurance, and balance training are also important, what people learn in these classes can also be incorporated into their daily activities. This includes tasks such as working in the kitchen, the garden or cleaning their home (i.e vacuuming & dusting).
