FAQ's for Functional Capacity Evaluations
What is a Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE)?
A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is a comprehensive assessment that measures your physical capabilities and limitations in relation to everyday tasks, work, or independent living. It is often used to support return-to-work planning, NDIS applications, insurance claims, or injury management.
What is the purpose of an FCE?
The main purpose of an FCE is to provide an objective, evidence-based report outlining what activities you can safely perform, and any restrictions or limitations. This helps guide return-to-work programs, NDIS planning, or compensation decisions.
How long does a Functional Capacity Evaluation take?
Most FCEs take between 2 to 4 hours, depending on the complexity of the case and the referral requirements. Some may be shorter or longer depending on the detail required.
Who can refer me for an FCE?
FCEs are usually requested by employers, insurers, case managers, GPs, or specialists, but you can also self-refer if you need documentation for NDIS or personal planning.
Is an FCE painful or risky?
An FCE is designed to be safe. While some tasks may reproduce symptoms, physiotherapists monitor you closely and adapt the assessment to ensure your safety throughout.
Do I need to prepare for an FCE?
You should wear comfortable clothing and supportive shoes, bring any mobility aids you normally use, and take prescribed medications as usual. Your physiotherapist will guide you through the rest.
What happens after an FCE?
After the evaluation, your physiotherapist will prepare a detailed report. Depending on your needs this may be shared with your GP, employer, insurer, or NDIS planner to assist with decisions around support, work duties, or treatment needs.
Is a Functional Capacity Evaluation covered by insurance or NDIS?
Yes. Many FCEs are funded by NDIS, WorkCover, insurers, or employers. If you are self-funded, your physiotherapy clinic can provide a cost estimate before booking.
