Developed in New Zealand in the 1970s, this method is widely researched and integrates a step-by-step evaluation to understand spinal issues and establish a tailored approach to each individual’s needs. At Core Physio & Pilates we incorporate the McKenzie Method® as a key aspect of our spinal care approach.
Understanding the McKenzie Method®
Benefits of the McKenzie Method®
The McKenzie approach encourages individuals to take an active role in their health, teaching them techniques that may assist in addressing spinal issues.
By providing knowledge on managing current discomfort and preventative strategies, the McKenzie Method® may help reduce the chances of future occurrences. This approach empowers patients to incorporate these practices into daily routines, potentially improving resilience against spinal issues.
The McKenzie Method® at Core Physio & Pilates
Our team at Core Physio & Pilates includes professionals who have trained in the McKenzie Method® or are actively completing this training. FAQ's for McKenzie Method
What is the McKenzie Method?
The McKenzie Method (also called Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy – MDT) is a specialised physiotherapy approach used worldwide to assess, treat, and prevent spinal, back, and neck pain. It focuses on patient self-management through specific exercises and postural education.
What conditions can the McKenzie Method help with?
The McKenzie Method can help with mechanical musculoskeletal conditions such as back, neck, and limb pain caused by joint, disc, or soft tissue problems. It is especially effective for issues like sciatica, disc bulges, and postural or movement-related pain.
What makes the McKenzie Method different from other treatments?
Unlike passive treatments, the McKenzie Method empowers you to actively control and reduce pain. It focuses on identifying a “directional preference” (e.g. extension, flexion) that relieves symptoms and builds long-term independence in managing back and neck pain.
Can the McKenzie Method prevent future back or neck pain?
Yes. A major focus of this method is teaching self-treatment strategies and postural awareness to reduce the risk of recurrence and maintain a healthy spine long-term.
Is the McKenzie Method only for spinal pain?
While it is most widely used for back and neck pain, some physiotherapists also apply McKenzie principles to extremity joint problems (shoulder, knee, hip).
Is the McKenzie Method evidence-based?
Yes. The McKenzie Method is supported by decades of clinical practice and research, particularly for managing low back pain and sciatica.
How many sessions will I need?
Many patients notice improvement in just a few sessions, particularly with spinal pain. Your physiotherapist will tailor a program and provide home exercises to continue progress between visits.
Is the McKenzie Method safe?
Yes. Exercises are safe and individually prescribed by a trained physiotherapist. Movements are adapted to your tolerance and gradually progressed as symptoms improve.
Do I need a referral to try the McKenzie Method?
No referral is required. However, if you wish to claim through Medicare, DVA, WorkCover, or NDIS, a GP or specialist referral may be needed.
A Commitment to Quality Care
Our approach to physiotherapy is both intensive and collaborative. We understand that achieving the best outcomes requires time, which is why we provide half-hour follow-up consultation sessions. This extended time allows our Physiotherapists to apply multiple techniques to all affected areas of the body, ensuring comprehensive care tailored to your needs.
