Sarah* came to see us at our Aberfoyle Practice with a significant problem that started 2 weeks after she had her second baby.
For no reason she felt a sharp pain across her lower back that radiated into her right buttock and leg. This was definitely worse in the mornings and evenings but better when she was moving around during the day. The pain was so restrictive that she was having problems looking after her new baby and toddler and was feeling helpless to change a worsening situation.
When we examined Sarah* we found that she had sustained an injury to her right sacroiliac joint that occurred because of her weakened core muscles and the lack of strength around her right hip.
The Physios first goal was to settle down the inflammation and pain in the sacroiliac joint which they attacked with soft tissue releases and stretching as well as mobilising that sacroiliac joint. A simple home exercise program of stretches kept her improving between treatments and overall she started getting better within the first few hands on treatments.
The next step was to get the underlying cause sorted out.
Sarah* started a Physio Group Exercise program with her Physio and after about three weeks started to feel the extra strength around her lower back, pelvis and hips that allowed her to start to move with more freedom and less fear of aggravating her back.
Sarah* and her Physio have got her program going and expect that she will need a few months of basic to intermediate Physio Group Exercise to really get her back to her normal recreational activities that included the gym and walking.
