Hydrotherapy Adelaide
At Core Physio & Pilates, we offer comprehensive hydrotherapy services designed to complement physical rehabilitation and enhance overall wellbeing.
Understanding Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy, a widely recognised physiotherapy approach, leverages the unique properties of water to support joint movement, muscle relaxation, and gentle resistance exercises in a low-impact environment. This treatment is suitable for a range of needs and conditions, provided under the guidance of our experienced physiotherapists.
Benefits of Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy sessions at Core Physio & Pilates make use of a controlled, warm water environment (33°C) that promotes comfort and relaxation. Warm water supports muscle relaxation, while buoyancy reduces compressive forces, which can allow for improved movement, particularly helpful for those managing limited joint mobility or recovering from surgery. This approach can support individuals with:
Post-surgical physical rehabilitation
Whiplash-related recovery
Workplace-related injuries
Orthopaedic rehabilitation (including knee, hip, shoulder, and spine)
Active ageing and gentle fitness
Recovery from severe sports injuries where traditional exercise may not be feasible

FAQ's for Hydrotherapy
What is hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy (also called aquatic physiotherapy) is a form of physiotherapy performed in a heated pool. The warmth and buoyancy of the water support your body, reduce pain, and allow safe, low-impact exercise to improve mobility, strength, and function.
What conditions can hydrotherapy help with?
Any muscular or joint conditions, osteoporosis, neurological conditions, balance, conditioning, chronic pain, injury rehab, pre- and post-op rehab.
How does hydrotherapy work?
The properties of water — buoyancy, warmth, and resistance — make movement easier and less painful. This allows you to perform exercises that might be difficult on land, helping to build strength, improve flexibility, and promote circulation.
Is hydrotherapy safe?
Yes. Hydrotherapy is safe and supervised by a qualified physiotherapist. The water is heated to a comfortable temperature and exercises are tailored to your abilities. If you have medical conditions, your physiotherapist will assess suitability before you start.
Do I need to be able to swim to do hydrotherapy?
No. Hydrotherapy is done in a shallow pool and supervised at all times. You don’t need to be able to swim — exercises are performed standing, floating, or with support.
How soon after surgery can I start hydrotherapy rehab?
Typically 6–8 weeks, unless otherwise specified by your surgeon. Your doctor and we need to check your wound to make sure it’s fully healed; otherwise you are at risk of infections. Once we are sure you’re safe we can get you started asap.
How long are hydro sessions?
30 minutes.
Do the group sessions mean I’m doing all the same exercises as everyone else while the physio instructs?
No, prior to starting groups, a physio will develop an individualised program with you in the pool, and you then carry out this program with the physio’s help in the group sessions. As you progress the Physiotherapist will progress your program to keep you moving towards your specific goals.
How many hydrotherapy sessions will I need?
The number of sessions depends on your condition and goals. Some people benefit from just a few weeks, while others include hydrotherapy as a regular part of their long-term management plan.
What should I bring to a hydrotherapy session?
Bring swimwear, a towel, and pool shoes if recommended. Some facilities may require a swimming cap.
Can hydrotherapy help with weight-bearing after surgery?
Yes. Hydrotherapy allows you to gradually reintroduce weight-bearing in a supported environment. This makes it an excellent option after joint replacements, healed fractures, or lower-limb surgeries.
Can I use my Medicare EPC / 5 bulk billed visits?
Yes. However there is an upfront fee which then Medicare will process the correct rebate back into your bank account — a gap fee will occur.
Do I need a referral for hydrotherapy?
In most cases, no referral is required to access hydrotherapy. However, if you are claiming through Medicare, DVA, NDIS, WorkCover, or private health, a referral from your GP or specialist may be needed.
Is hydrotherapy covered by private health or NDIS?
Yes. Many private health funds cover hydrotherapy under physiotherapy extras. NDIS and other funding bodies may also support hydrotherapy if it’s aligned with your goals and plan.
