Hydrotherapy and knee replacement

Jan* came to see us at Core Physio & Pilates Studio, following a total knee replacement. She was finding it difficult to do her stretching and mobility exercises. Jan* was also experiencing pain when she put weight on her knee. Overall, Jan* was feeling a bit stuck with the progress of her knee, her Physiotherapist suggested that she try Hydrotherapy, believing that the warmth of the water would help to relax her muscles and tissues, allowing more freedom of movement in her knee. The water took the weight out of Jan’s legs and allowed her to easily do more exercises, building up the strength in her knee with less pain.

Jan*’s exercises in the pool included simple walking, squatting, and some range of movement exercises. Jan* reported that she was able to move her knee much more freely and felt like she could work her muscles more with the exercises prescribed. Jan* was able to move out of the pool in a few weeks, having developed enough strength and movement in the knee to allow her to do her exercises at home and get on with her rehabilitation.
