There are many myths and misconceptions surrounding Physiotherapy, so let’s debunk some to help you get on the road to recovery at Core Physio as quickly as possible!
MYTH 1: I need scans before seeing a physiotherapist
Whilst imaging and scans can be useful to diagnose and quickly address problematic injuries, it is commonly unnecessary before seeing a physiotherapist. During your first consultation, we will discuss your symptoms, medical history and lifestyle as well as assess your injury. Then in most cases, we will provide hands-on therapy to help alleviate pain. If an injury does require a scan, your physiotherapist will be able to direct you on the next steps.
MYTH 2: I can only go to the physiotherapist for muscular injuries.
Physiotherapists are often believed to treat only sporting muscular injuries, however we can treat many different kinds of conditions, including:
Headaches, Vertigo, Neurological diseases such as MS, nerve damage and strokes, Jaw pain, and Ergonomic assessment. We also provide Pilates-based exercise and rehabilitation programs for many conditions and presentations.
MYTH 3: Physiotherapists are only for people with private health insurance.
Private health isn’t required for physiotherapy sessions! Whilst you are able to see a physiotherapist by paying out of pocket, you may also be eligible for up to five visits per year through Medicare. This does have some special requirements, such as having a chronic condition, so it is best to discuss with your GP.
MYTH 4: I need a referral from a GP to see a physiotherapist.
It’s a common misconception that you need a referral from your GP to see a physiotherapist, however this is untrue! Physiotherapists are trained in being able to diagnose and treat many different conditions. Save yourself further pain and book in to see one of our physiotherapists at Core Physio today!
