We had a client recently attend the practice that had an interesting but common story that we thought we would share.
For a few years, Jan* had been managing nasty knee pain that had been gradually getting worse. Since retiring as a school teacher, Jan* had been enjoying spending more time in the garden and running after the grand kids. After having put off a total knee replacement for a couple of years, she had finally decided to have the surgery. Following advice from her specialist to see the Physio Jan* attended the clinic.
The Physio’s main focus initially was to manage her pain through hands on treatment and help her regain her full range of movement and strength through home exercises and then a Physio Group Exercise program.
After surgery such as this, there can be a loss in strength, endurance, balance and knee range of movement. The Physio identified a loss in balance, difficulty getting out of her chair and a habit of favouring the operated leg (by standing with most of her weight on the un-operated side). These findings can lead to other injuries and ongoing issues.
Jan’s* program was written to take all of these points into consideration along with Jan’s* goals including being able to return to her gardening and having the strength to get off the floor.
Jan’s* program has been progressed accordingly. She is no longer experiencing pain in the knee, has regained the appropriate movement of her knee, generally feels more confident with better balance and is looking forward to continuing her program as she reports she finds looking after the grandchildren easier as she feels fitter.
