Pre & Postnatal Physiotherapy Plympton
Supporting Your Pregnancy and Postnatal Journey with Individualised Care
What is Pre & Postnatal Physiotherapy?
Pregnancy and childbirth bring unique changes to the body that can lead to various physical challenges. Our women’s health physiotherapists at Core Physiotherapy and Pilates Studio offer tailored sessions aimed at helping women maintain strength, mobility, and comfort throughout their pregnancy and beyond. We provide strategies to address common physical concerns with a gentle, evidence-based approach that adapts to each stage of pregnancy and postpartum recovery.

Common Physical Changes During Pregnancy and Postnatal Period
Low Back Pain
Low back pain is common, especially as pregnancy progresses. As the centre of gravity shifts, back muscles may strain, contributing to discomfort. Our physiotherapists offer hands-on techniques, postural guidance, and targeted exercises to maintain comfort and mobility.
Pelvic Floor Weakness
Hormonal changes during pregnancy often affect the pelvic floor. Physiotherapy sessions include specific pelvic floor strengthening exercises and, if appropriate, group classes that can support muscle tone and function during pregnancy and after birth.
Sacroiliac Joint Pain (SIJ)
SIJ pain may result from hormonal changes that increase joint flexibility to accommodate childbirth. This can create discomfort in the lower back and buttocks. Our physiotherapists provide exercises to enhance joint stability and manual techniques to manage pain and support function.
Sciatica
Pressure on the sciatic nerve may lead to discomfort, numbness, or tingling sensations. Stretching exercises and gentle manual therapy can relieve symptoms, promoting greater mobility and comfort.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Increased fluid retention during pregnancy can sometimes cause swelling around the carpal tunnel, leading to tingling, numbness, and pain in the hands and fingers. Physiotherapists can offer mobilisation, soft tissue techniques, and exercises to relieve symptoms.
Postnatal Challenges
Post-birth, women often experience ongoing physical changes. We provide tailored treatment for common postnatal issues such as:
- Low Back Pain: Addressed through mobilisation, stretching, and strengthening exercises.
- Pelvic Floor Weakness: Pelvic floor exercises and group classes to regain muscle tone.
- Diastasis Recti (Abdominal Separation): Strengthening exercises that target abdominal muscles and core stability.
