Needling for chronic pain
Recently an older person came to Core Physiotherapy with ongoing lower back and hip pain. Wilfred* was finding it difficult to garden for longer than 15-20 minutes without his lower back feeling weak, he was finding it hard to get down to ground level. When we assessed Wilfred* we discovered that the range of movement in his lower back was restricted and there was significant tenderness in the muscles next to his spine and gluteals. Wilfred* mentioned that he had tried massage prior to this, but it wasn’t effective for more than a couple of days.
Wilfred* then received dry needling to the sensitive and tight areas in his lumbar spine and gluteals. Immediately after dry needling Wilfed* reported soreness in his muscles, but it felt different to the way that it had prior to this. Wilfred* then started doing some specific exercises to get his spine moving.
Wilfred* now reports that he is able to do all of his gardening without the tightness and restriction that he was feeling prior to this, to prevent any more injuries he makes sure that he warms his back up before gardening. Wilfred* is excited about his new gardening projects and is looking forward to the winter rain so that his garden receives moisture and is ready for spring.
