Recently, Geraldine* came into Core Physiotherapy & Pilates Studio, feeling a lack of confidence when going down to the shops, or walking outside on the grass and gravel. When we assessed Geraldine* we found that her sense of balance was diminished, she was slow to change direction and found it difficult to perform activities such as standing up from a chair. Geraldine* stated at the time that she thought this was just a normal part of ageing (it isn’t).
Geraldine* joined our balance classes, where she participated in a range of activities such as standing on one leg, walking along a line, and kicking a ball. Initially, she was unable to successfully complete these activities without a balance aid such as a walking stick or a benchtop. After a few weeks of participating in a combination of the balance class and safe home exercises prescribed by her Physiotherapist. Geraldine* was able to walk in a line one foot in front of the other without help, she was also able to stand on one leg for up to 5 seconds.
Geraldine* now reports increased mobility and confidence when heading down to the shops, or taking the grandkids to the park. Geraldine* plans to continue to participate in the balance classes to further improve her balance skills, and as a result, continue to build her confidence and improve her overall quality of life.
