When the season changes from Summer to Winter, you may feel an increase in your aches and pains.
Here are some things that you can do to help yourself and your family alleviate their symptoms during the winter months.
When you are out in the cold taking the kids to school, running errands or exercising make sure that you are rugged up from head to toe! This will keep your muscles and ligaments warm reducing the risk of an injury.
Whilst we all feel like indulging in a piece of hot chocolate cake or a melted grilled cheese sandwich during the cooler months, it won’t help your body combat the effects of the cold weather. Foods that are rich in carbohydrates aren’t good for you or your family, causing the body’s energy levels to become unbalanced. A choice of foods that are high in protein and low in carbohydrates such as soups, green leafy veggies and citrus fruits will help your family sustain their energy levels. They are also a fantastic source of energy and nutrition for your muscles and joints.
Whilst we may not feel thirsty during the winter months it is important to stay hydrated! Dehydration is one of the major causes of muscle cramps. Drink plenty of water, fresh fruit juice and teas, keeping your coffee intake to a minimum will also help! Staying hydrated ensures that your muscles are lubricated and helps the functioning of your joints.
Whilst everyone loves staying rugged up under the covers when it’s cold and windy outside it is important to stay active! Light to moderate aerobic exercise helps the joints remain limber and supple, reducing your aches and pains. If you don’t enjoy exercising outdoors in the cold temperatures Pilates is a fantastic way to stretch your muscles and keep your body active during the cooler months.
