The 2021 Wheelchair Rugby National Championships were held on the Gold Coast from 28-30 May and Jason Bryant (Core Physio Melrose Park) was lucky enough to travel with the SA Sharks to provide team Physiotherapy and wheelchair technician support.
The event was not immune to COVID-19 having already been rescheduled once, following the Brisbane lockdown in April and only to be subsequently influenced by the Melbourne lockdown in May which lead up the Championship weekend.
The SA Sharks battled it out against WA and Australian Barbarians teams for Division 2 honours. In a spirited team effort, our minor round record was 0-4 heading into Sunday Finals; however, the team rallied and won our (only) Semi-Final match and subsequently won Division 2 Silver losing to an impressive WA team!
Division 1 consisted of NSW, Qld and Vic (those that escaped Melbourne before lockdown and cleared by Qld Health), with NSW taking the Division 1 gold.
Furthermore, the SA Sharks were also awarded: Div 2 All-Australian Coach, Best Div 2 High Pointer, and Best Div 2 Low Pointer. Wheelchair Rugby is a reverse-inclusion sport in many states, with state contacts available here – Click Here. To make a booking with Jason press the button that’s below.
